The Sad Legend of Dr. King Schultz
                                                      By Megan Elizabeth Ryan

Along the Colorado plains our bounty hunters Dr. Schultz and his new apprentice Django travel for the next bounty. After a long ride they stop to camp for the night. While cooking up some rabbits they caught, Django asks Dr. Schultz something that has been on his mind for quite some time. “Hey King” he says, his eyes bright with curiosity. “What's your story? How did you become a bounty hunter?” Dr. Shultz smiles but a deep depression comes to his eyes, he sighs “That, my dear Django, is a very sad story. Unlike the one of Broomhilda.” Django looks at the Doctor knowing something bad must have happened.
“Well, don't you have family? And don't you have your own Broomhilda?” Dr. Schultz looks into the camp fire, his expression is blank. “I did, a long time ago.” King sighs and smiles “Beings it seems like you will have this on your mind until I tell you. I will tell you how I became a Bounty Hunter.” His smile disappears. “But I must ask that you never ask me to tell this tale or mention it again, it is much too painful for me. You understand?” Django nods and sits like he always does when Dr. Shultz tells a story but this time his nose and mouth are hidden behind his knees, he knows this story does not end well and wants to be prepared to hide his whole face when he sheds tears for his dear friend.

Well, it all began 8 years ago, back when I had short hair and no beard, in a town not to far from here called Oakley where my brother Dr.Herman Schultz and I ran our own dentistry. My brother was already happily married to a woman named Clair with a child Hans who was 6 at the time they owned a farm house outside of town. I on the other hand lived in the upper room of our dentistry. I wasn't married at the time but I didn't really care to get married. I was mostly concerned about my practice. My brother would bicker at me all the time but I never listened. It always seemed like the women in town only wanted me for my money anyway. Being a dentist made me quite wealthy. I had a huge library and everything above in my upstairs room. I had a lot of peaceful nights in that room.
Shooting at the time was just a hobby and I would go out every afternoon with my friend, Sheriff William Hensworth, for target practice. One day when coming back to town from a good day of shooting I noticed some men with some Native women walkup the road. The women were tied to the men with ropes, I thought they were bought for slavery at the time, it was despicable but there was nothing I could do but watch as these men parade around town with their new trophies. That's when I saw her. A woman in a pale buckskin dress with blue and red beads decorating it. Her hair was raven black and long, her skin dark from years of sun and her eyes a deep dark brown. In honesty I never saw any of the tribal women before (nor tribal people period) but out of all of them she stood out the most. She was dirty from being dragged through the mud and she looked at me scared wanting help. I looked at the man who I believed owned her. He was drunk, very drunk. I felt I could save her. “Excuse me sir?” I ask, he stared at me while taking a swig of his bottle “Might I inquire about your Native lady here?”
“What about her?” He replied
“Well I wanted to get some help around my office and I was wondering if you were willing to sell?”
“Not for sale” he said “She's gonna be my wife.”
“Ah, I see. Are you sure you want a wife like her? I mean she could be riddled with disease.”
“Really?” he said thinking about his decision, he looks at her and then back at me. “Say, You're that dentist aren't you?”
“Yes I am, Dr. King Shultz from Schultz brother’s dentistry.”
“Good, I got something in my mouth that's been bugging the hell out of me, get it out and I'll give ya the girl” he said rubbing his jaw.
“Alright! It's a deal!”
I took both of them to my dentistry, I asked the young lady to sit in a chair I had set aside for wives and children and went to work. I found a huge molar and yanked it out with the pliers. The poor woman was terrified from all the screaming he was making and I was actually making it hurt for the gentleman on purpose, but he was drunk so I figured he would be nice and numb. When we were done the man told the young lady that she was mine, getting blood on her pretty face and walked off. I never did see him again. I grabbed my handkerchief to wipe the blood off of her face. “Do you speak English?” I asked but she just stared at me confused still. Poor thing. I took her into the parlor and even though she didn't understand me I still talked to her. “I'm sorry for saying you're riddled with disease, I did that to help you if you understand. I don't think your people are diseased.” I would say to her. She would just look at me with those bright brown eyes. I offered her a seat and I just sat across from her, still talking like she can understand me. “My brother and his family are coming over for dinner tonight; my sister in law can give you a bath, would you like that?” Still nothing.
All of a suddenly my cuckoo clock struck 6, she must of jumped about 10 feet in the air it scared her so much. She ran behind my chair frightened. I had a sense of pride knowing that she saw me as something safe to hide behind. I got up to comfort her. “Oh my dear it's alright! It's a clock. Here I'll show you.” We walked to the clock on the wall. “See. This is a cuckoo clock; whenever this hand reaches this number it makes that noise.” I showed her and she finally said something. “Cuoockoo clock?”
“Yes!, very good!”
She then started laughing. “Cuckoo Clock”
“Yes, well I guess it is a funny word.” I started laughing as well. Then I noticed her beautiful teeth. “My you have a beautiful smile! How do you keep your teeth so clean?” Of course no answer but I was glad she looked more relaxed and she was smiling, she was growing more radiant as I got to know her.
“Oh I forgot to show you the cuckoo bird!” I pulled out the little wooden bird “This bird comes out when it strikes midnight and noon” She looked at it more curious then. I finally started to attempt at getting introductions across. “My name is King Schultz.”
She repeats “k-king”
“Very good”
“Schhuls”
“Schultzzz with a zzz.”
“Schultzzzzz”
“No, just one z”
“Schultz”
“Wuhnderbar! You learn quickly! Now let’s see if I'm just as smart.” I pointed back at myself “I'm King Schultz and you are?” I gestured back to her. She looked at me bright eyed and smiling and pointed to the cuckoo clock. I laughed and replied jokingly. “Cuckoo clock?” she laughed too and shook her head to say no. Then she pointed at the cuckoo bird still hanging out
“Bird?” I asked. She nodded yes and repeated “Bird” as if to be sure. Then she held up her hand and put her thumb and forefinger away from each other.
“Little?' I asked again she repeated to be sure “Little” then I finally said “Bird Little?” I felt silly cause I knew that wasn't right but she shook her head no and made a gesture to switch words. “Little Bird, of course of course. Little Bird, what a lovely name” I smiled and she smiled back, for a little while we were both in a trance and enjoying each others company in silence and looking at each others eyes. Two worlds that were completely different collided in a beautiful way that day.
My brother and his family showed up about 10 minutes later while Little Bird and I were still sitting. I got up to welcome them, my brother looked very shocked as did his wife, and my little nephew was intrigued as all children are. “Mommy look! Uncle King got an Indian too!” Hans said as he started to run up to greet the new stranger but Clair grabbed him before he could get far. “Don't touch her Hans! She looks dirty.” I knew my sister was concerned and I knew my brother was as well so I tried to clear the air as soon as possible. “Actually Clair I was just going to inquire you about that. This is my new lady friend Little Bird. I was wondering if you could bathe her, the poor thing has been through a lot.”  My sister was not pleased but she nodded with compliance and was at least nice to Little Bird, she smiled and said “Come this way Little Bird and I'll help you take a bath and give you new clothes ok?” she took her hand and lead her to the bathroom. My Nephew went to go play with some toys I have for customers with children while me and Herman sat and talked about my most odd circumstance. “Alright little brother what are you doing with one of those savages?” I was surprised by my brother’s choice of words. “Now Herman, she's not savage, actually she’s very nice and very intelligent person she just doesn’t know about our culture yet. Mother taught us better than that you know.” I looked at him in disappointment, I was really angry about what he said. “I know, I know.” he replied “I apologize, people talk about them and it gets to me, I know she's a person no different from you or me. The tribe passes our farm all the time and never try to hurt us so I shouldn't judge.” I smiled at his reply.
“The tribe?” I ask.
“Yes, she probably is part of the Lakota tribe that passes our farm every summer. I've seen men go there to trade and I guess beings everyone’s been hitting hard times lately they had to trade some of their women too.” My brother replied saddened, we both didn't believe in the whole slavery nonsense and neither did our mother.
“Tell me King, you didn't buy her for the same reason as those men, did you?” my brother asked suspiciously.
“NO! Of course not! I did it to save her, and I technically didn't buy her I just traded my dental services for her. The man she was with was indeed a savage, he would have been cruel to her, I couldn't just let that be.” I said knowing exactly what my brother meant. “Well, then I think it's best to take her back home tomorrow.” My brother said straightening his collar. “She belongs with her people, her tribe is only a day away from here, you can go catch up with them tomorrow.” My heart sunk, I wanted to take her home but at the same time I selfishly wanted her with me.
“Alright, I'll ride out tomorrow with her.” Right as we finished talking Clair and Little Bird walked in. Little Bird had a proper ladies dress on but I liked her in her buckskin better and I think she did too; she looked very uncomfortable, she kept tugging at her clothes while we talked. “I'm sorry Clair I had you do that, I hope it wasn't any trouble.” I said apologetically. “It’s fine brother, actually she was very good, she knew exactly what the tub was for and the towels as well, the only thing she didn't understand was the soap but when I showed her she understood and she liked the smell of it. She looked fairly relieved to take a bath too.” she looked at Little Bird and laughed as Little Bird kept tugging at her dress. “As you can see putting her in a dress was harder than the bath.”
I was relieved to see that my sister liked her; she even took her into the kitchen to show her how to cook while my brother and I talked business. When we went to eat even Hans helped her to use the silverware. It was all very endearing and Little Bird even loved the food she had eaten. She especially loved dessert. A simple chocolate cake. After my families visit I told Little Bird to go ahead and make herself at home, I really had some paperwork to do. I didn't get much done though because I was watching her most of the time. She looked through my books trying to understand them then a violinist outside started playing, Mozart I believe. She was intrigued and sat to listen. She then looked at me and started crying. It came to me that she was never introduced to this before; she didn't know who Mozart was or Bach, she wasn't sad but moved. I went and hugged her. “I'll be taking you back home tomorrow.” I said with utter disappointment. She didn't understand but she could see in my face I wasn't happy. She hugged me back. “I think it's time for bed, I'll sleep on the divan and you can take my bed.”  I showed her to my room. “Well here is your bed, goodnight.” She stopped me before I left and pointed to the back of her dress. “Oh, I guess you need help with that.” I said nervously.
I unbuttoned all of the buttons down her back. It still amazes me how much women tolerate those things. When I got through all the buttons I didn't even have time to say “done” when she completely removed the dress. I turned right around, I could feel my face burn bright red. I said “Goodnight!” and ran right out the door and shut it. I didn't know she would just undress right in front of me but I guess that type of thing didn't matter where she came from. I tired my best to forget about it and went to bed.
Later that night while I was asleep on the divan I all of a suddenly felt something crawl behind me. I could tell it was Little Bird, I think all she had was a sheet on and she was freezing cold. I could feel her shake. I forgot to make her a fire upstairs so it was no wonder she was cold. I didn't say anything. I just left her alone and gave her warmth; I felt a peace I never felt before. Years of schooling and concentrating on the dental business kept me almost devoid of women. My brother and I went to a brothel every now and then sure but this was different. Yet here I was. Wrapped in the embrace of a half naked women and feeling her sleepily breathe on my neck. It was heaven and I fell asleep very quickly.
I woke up before Little Bird and went to go clean her clothes and make her breakfast before we left to take her home. After last night I was not in the brightest of spirits. I didn't want our time together to end but I felt it was right to take her home. I didn't talk much to her as we were getting ready, I didn't see the point. We left with the carriage and made out past my brothers farm for Little Birds tribe. The camp was spectacular. There were Tipis everywhere and dresses just as beautiful as Little Birds. All of her people were staring at me, some scared, some curious and some just laughing at the tooth on my carriage. Little Bird took my hand and lead me to the biggest Tipi in the tribe. She ran up and hugged a very old wise looking man; I assumed he was the chief. He had long white hair and a headdress on. He came up to me and asked “Who are you?” I was shocked “You speak English?”
“Yes, I learned a long time ago, thought it was good as Chief to learn, now tell me stranger what are you doing with my daughter?”
“Well, I noticed she was with a man who looked cruel and I wanted to help her and bring her home.”
The old man smiled and hugged me. “Thank you for bringing her back to her people, come and smoke with us you must be tired.” “Well thank you sir, I would love to. My name is Dr. King Schultz” he looked back smiling “Mine is Chief Running Deer” I went in with him and a few other people and Little Bird joined us as well. I wanted to get something off my chest so I asked Running Deer “Why did you trade your women?” the Chief sighed “We didn’t, they actually volunteered, the men who wanted to give us guns asked about our women, I originally declined the offer but the women stood up and offered themselves. All of them have been afraid for their children and people’s lives since white man come so they wanted us to have guns to defend ourselves.” He looked at Little Bird “Which is why I am happy you brought back my daughter, even though I told her no she disobeyed me anyway and ran off with that man for the good of her people, I found guns in her bed instead as well as others.” We looked at Little Bird, the Chief shaking his head but I smiled with a new respect for her.
After that we discussed a lot of things, politics, my work, Oakley. Hours passed when I finally decided that it was time to leave. “Well Running Deer, I'm sorry to leave but I really must go, I have a business to attend to.” He grabbed my arm gently. “Wait” he told everyone else to leave so only me and him were alone. “My daughter has eyes on you and beings you saved her life you have my full permission to marry her.” I was stunned “Chief, I-I won't lie I have a fondness for your daughter too but we barely understand each other, I don't want her to be depressed because she feels out of place.”
“Tell you what, we don't plan on leaving this spot for another 14 moons (two weeks), you can stay here and get to know each other better. My daughter is a very smart woman, she learns very quickly and I've always wanted her to learn English as well and I'm sure you'll learn a lot too.” he smiled.
“Well I still have to go back and tell my brother and I'm just not really sure.” I lied. “That's fine my new friend. Go back home tomorrow and take care of business, we'll still be here.” he hugged me and whispered “I hope before we leave, I can call you son.” I smiled and walked back to my carriage. Little Bird ran up to me yelling “King! King!” and hugged me. She looked sad and I held her face and told her I would come back. She still cried, she just didn't understand I wasn't leaving for good. Thankfully her father could tell her. I hopped in my carriage and left for town. I got back as fast as I could, packed my things and stopped by my brother’s house to explain what was going on. “Wait, so you're planning on marrying her?” my brother asked “Yes and no. I'm getting to know her and then we'll see.” I looked at my brother embarrassed, knowing this was silly. “You're an idiot.”
“I know.”
“An idiot in love, you go ahead and go and I'll take over the shop. Just don't come back without her.” my brother smiled “Oh and leave the carriage and take my horse instead.” I smiled back at him, hugged him and left. When I got back to the tribe I was informed I was staying in the same tipi with the Chief. Those two weeks were the best I ever had. I learned so much about a new culture and of course my time with Little Bird was even more valuable. After about a week we were able to understand each other a lot more, her father was right about her being a quick learner.
One day we went for a walk around a lake and I started asking the more difficult questions that I asked before but she couldn't understand. “So how do your people keep your teeth so clean?” I pointed to my mouth and showed my teeth. “Teeth?” she replied “yes, how do you keep them so white?” she smiled and went to the nearest pine tree. She picked a pine twig as big as my hand off and handed it to me. “Put in mouth.” she said so I did and then she made a brushing motion with her hand. I started brushing my teeth and the difference was amazing. “Wow! My mouth feels so much cleaner! And it's so simple! Why didn't I think of this before?” I held her. “You're so smart and beautiful.” She looked at me square in the eye and said “Your mouth smell good now” she gave me a small kiss then I kissed her back. “I love you.” I finally said and she replied “Love you too.” she smiled and I brush some of her hair behind her ear. “I'm hungry, home?” she said I smiled back at her and we held hands as we head back to camp to eat.
Later in the second week, we laid under the shade of a tree I asked her more about the music that we listened to when she stayed with me. She said “I never heard things like that before, I heard drum and I love drum but the things that man played was gentle and sweet.” she looked up at me. “Some of my people don't like white people but I know there are good and bad white people like there is good and bad Lakota. The music you showed me and you saving me are proof that there are good white people.” She looked at me content. “The tribe will be following the buffalo soon, are you going to follow us?” She asked. “Actually I was wondering if you wanted to marry me.” I asked, she smiled probably the biggest smile I've ever seen on her face but I got up and faced her and held her hands. “Now before you say yes I want you to think about this, marrying me would mean you would have to leave your family and you probably won't see them again. It would mean you would have to adapt to our ways and as much as I love you dressed the way you are it would mean having to wear those terrible dresses.” she rolled her eyes and we laughed “Not because I want you to but because you will be safer and more accepted in town. Personally if I could I would leave with you and live amongst your people but I can't abandon my brother like that.”
She looked at the ground for awhile then looked back up at me. “My people come by every summer, so I will see my family again and I don't mind dresses.” she paused then grabbed my coat to pull me closer “As long as you take off dress.” I smiled “That will be no problem my dear.” I kissed her and she grabbed my hat and ran to tell the chief. When she told him he cried out in happiness and hugged Little Bird and me. “We will have a wedding tomorrow.” he said. I asked if I needed to prepare for anything and he said “No, we have been planning for this since you came back. Just enjoy your time together and we will handle everything.” I was surprised as to how much the Chief accepted me. The next day Little Bird and I had a traditional Lakota wedding. We were showered with gifts, one of those gifts being Fritz from the Chief who said he was the smartest horse they had. After the wedding we were escorted to a smaller Tipi that I didn't see until now. “This is your final gift, when you both wake we will be gone.” he smiled and gave Little Bird a final hug and gave me a hug as well and said “You protect my daughter my son.” he smiled then said “See you next summer.”
We both went into our temporary home and didn't hesitate. Well, I guess I don't have to tell you what we did next. I'll just say it was a magical night. When we woke the tribe was long gone and Little Bird, my brother’s horse, Fritz and I were the only ones left. They had left some supplies so we could pack up the small tipi and head back to town. We stopped off at my brother’s house first to drop off his horse. He was proud to see both of us and I had told him we had gotten married. He stated that it's not a legal marriage until we got the paper saying so and he wanted to be witness. We smiled and Little Bird hugged him saying “Hello my brother!” He was absolutely shocked by how much English Little Bird had learned in only two weeks. I asked that night as we went to bed why she never bothered learning English from her father. She said “Because at first I didn't like white man or their language. I still don't like language much, not enough heart I guess.”
“Well maybe I can teach you some German as well, would you like that?”
“What is German?” she asked
“It's the language from my country, we speak many languages besides English, there's French, German, Italian and others that I don’t even know.”
“Wow” she looked at me shocked “are there really that many tribes like that beyond the sea?'
“Yes, whole countries of them.”
“I hope there is enough room here for all of you and us.” she exclaimed worried
“Don't worry my dear; there will be room for your people still.” I grabbed her in my arms and held tight.
We spent a wonderful year together, her English was exceptional and her German was good too. She helped out as my nurse along with Clair and Little Bird would still get to see her family during the summer and I encouraged my brother and his family to go along. Despite the fact that the Lakota had perfect teeth some of them would still need care so we would give them dental care and they would pay us back in buffalo meat to last us till next summer. We were all really happy.
One day as I was getting dressed, Little Bird came over to me to help me straighten up a bit. She felt my chin. “When are you going to grow out this beard that everyone has?” she would ask me. “I'm telling you Fräulein you'll hate it, it's itchy and it will scratch your face. If you're so curious about what beard hair feels like go touch my brothers.” I would laugh at her curiosity for that.
“I don't want to feel your brother’s beard. He may not like that.”
“How come your peoples men never grew beards?” I asked
“I don't know, they just never did. They grew out their hair though, when are you going to grow your hair out?” she asked
“Never” I smiled as she finished buttoning me up. She smiled up at me. “You dare refuse a woman who’s with child?”
“What?” I asked
“I'm pregnant.”
I paused, I was stunned then a huge smile appeared on my face. We had tried for awhile to have a child but for some reason never ended up and now here she was telling me I was going to be a father. I grabbed her and swung her around and yelled out “We're going to have a baby! We're going to have a baby!” I ran downstairs to tell my brother and sister and nephew. We were greeted with praise. Little Bird then told me that tomorrow she should go visit her father to tell him the great news. I said “Yes, we'll all go together as a family!” I was so happy but the next day I caught a horrible cold. Little Bird insisted I stay in bed and that her and my sibling’s family will go. I said fine and let them ride off. This was the last time I saw them alive.
Later on that night with out me knowing, a horde of bandits passed through our town. They had passed while I slept and dreamt about my future together with Little Bird and our child. When I woke next morning feeling better the Sheriff ran up to me as I walked outside to get a breath of fresh air. “Dr. Schultz?” he said lowering his hat down. “My condolences.”
“What do you mean?” I asked
“Some bandits came by town last night, they were hired to rob and kill Chief Running Deer’s tribe and steal what they could.”
My face went pale and my heart sunk.
“We tried to stop them but by the time we reached the Lakota camp the damage had been done.”
“Is my wife ok? What about my brother and his family?”
“We don't know Doctor, we didn't even know they were there it was so dark. I didn't even know if your Brother was out there until I went to check up on his place and his things were gone”
Without hesitation I ran to the stable to grab Fritz and rode out all day as fast as I could. I just didn't want to believe anything Hensworth said. When I finally got to the camp I had found that he was speaking the truth. Tipis were burned; men women and children were laid out on the ground. Shot. I found Chief Running Deer. He had been shot and scalped then I found my brother and sister and nephew all holding each other, dead. Then there was Little Bird. On the ground cold. I picked her up and held her in my arms. Hoping maybe there was some life in her left, nothing. It had been to long, she was far gone. I held her and cried all night until the Sheriff found me the next morning.
I had passed out from crying so much with my dear wife in my arms. The Sheriff came up to me. “Hey Dr.King, we were all getting worried about you.”
“Well, so sorry to worry you all” I replied, with a bit of venom on the tongue. The Sheriff offered his hand to help me up and I immediately felt awful about my response to him. “I apologize my friend, it's just I can't stand...” I looked back at my wife and like a child I started crying again. My friend held me and comforted me “I understand Doctor, I considered this tribe family and an extension of the town, they never caused harm and sometimes even helped the town out. This is an absolute tragedy, these people didn't deserve it. Come on, I'll help you bury your family and some of the other Lakota people then we'll rest for the night.”
“Yes, I suppose that's the best thing to do.”
We spent all day burying my family and part of the tribe; I kept my tears in as much as I could. I think that was the point when I finally learned to suppress these feelings. When it came to burying my wife I did it myself. She was buried next to her father. Afterwards we took the remaining bodies, piled them and put a tipi cover over the poor souls to protect them from the wilderness then made camp not to far away. While we ate dinner next to the fire the Sheriff gave me my first hunt. “This was put on my desk yesterday after you left. I didn't want to tell you while you were in grief and burying those people but I figured you'd want this now, this poster shows the gang that came through and murdered the tribe. They've been massacring people and stealing throughout the west and north and have been causing nothing but problems for both the Natives and the government.” “What are you suggesting my friend?” I asked, knowing exactly what he was asking me.
“I'm suggesting you use your shooting skills to get your vengeance Dr.Shultz.” he hands me a billfold “Here is the paperwork in case someone tries to stop you, you have full legal rights to go and shoot these bastards down.”
“Believe me Sheriff, I would have gone and shot these bastards down without legal right.”
“Good, I'm certain if you go out tomorrow you'll be able to catch up with them. Word is they're heading to New York.”
So I took Fritz and rode.
For about 2 weeks I searched for them, rage boiling inside me as I rode and thought about all that I lost. I began thinking about my wife and if she was raped as well before she died. This made me even worse along the trip. I finally found them in a bar. The Dubell gang they were called. When I saw them, I didn't pause, this was my first bounty but that didn't even matter to me, I was out for vengeance. I pulled out my gun and shot each and every one of the gang members until the leader, Frank Dubell was left. I shot him in the leg to make sure he didn't get away. I wanted to ask him some questions first. I went up to him and bent down so I could stare him straight in the eye he was screaming from pain. “The fuck do you want! Why'd you kill my gang and shoot me in the leg?”
“I need to ask you a few questions. Did your gang kill an Lakota tribe back in Colorado?”
“Yeah, shot every one of  them injuns down.”
“Did you shoot a white family and a Lakota girl in proper dress too?”
“Yeah, the fuck you getting at with this?”
“I'm almost done, now did you rape the Native girl in proper dress?”
He laughed the most evil laugh I have ever heard.
“Yeah, me and my men had a fun time with that one before and after she died.”
I finally snapped. I shot him twice in the legs for killing my Sister in law and nephew. Once in the stomach for killing my brother. Once in the crotch for raping my Little Bird and then once in the heart for killing her and my child. Then I grabbed every gun from every man I shot and put every single bullet from them into Mr. Frank Dubells worthless corpse even though he was beyond deceased. When I was done the Marshall and Sheriff of the town came in and took me away. I gave them the billfold and they wired Sheriff Hensworth back home so I was set free. When they tried to give me the money I at first refused but then they told me “Listen son, if you don't take this money this will be seen as a murder for revenge and judging by the way you fucked Frank up in there that's exactly what it is. So take the money and go home.” I did take the money and I did go home.
When I got home the rest of the tribe had been buried and I went to go see Sheriff Hensworth to thank him. For a month I stayed in my office and drank. I grew out my beard and my hair like Little Bird always wanted me to. The Sheriff came in to talk and visit one day. “Are you doing ok Dr.Shultz? It's been a month and no one's seen ya, we're all getting worried about you.”
“Well I'm glad you all care so much.”
“Let me ask you Dr.Shultz, Are you interested in the bounty hunting business. Cause looking at the way you are now I don't think you're cut out for dentistry anymore.”
“You're right my friend, I've really been waiting for the next bounty for awhile.”  I nodded.
“Well I got a couple for you, they're far away from here and they're nasty sons of bitches that deserve what's coming to em.” the Sheriff smiled at me. I thanked him, sold my brothers farm and dentistry, took Fritz and the carriage and rode away from my once happy home.

The next day Django and King show up in a very nice graveyard. King has a hand full of flowers he picked to put on Little Birds grave and Django has the rest of the flowers. King knocks on the door of a shack in the middle of the graveyard. A man missing an eye opens the door. “Sheriff Hensworth?” King asks surprised but happy. “Undertaker Hensworth now, who's that fella with you?”
“That is my newest friend and bounty hunter apprentice Django.”
“Good to meet ya son.” Hensworth extends his hand to shake Djangos
“Good to meet you too.” Django smiles and shakes back
“I'm guessing you're here to see your family King?” Hensworth asks. King nods yes.
“About time you came to visit, they all missed you.” They walk up to the biggest headstones in the graveyard, while Hensworth explained what happened while King was gone.
“Well, when you left nasty rumors started going around about the Indians killing your family and what not so people, mainly kids started coming up here and desecrating graves. I knew better than most of the town so on the day I lost this eye which wasn't long after you left I became the undertaker instead. People are more afraid of undertakers than Sheriffs anyway so I took this job and I've been here ever since. Built a lot of the tombstones too.” They approached a beautiful white marble tombstone with a bird carved on it and in writing says “Here lies Little Bird, beloved wife, daughter, sister and mother.” King almost broke down in tears from what it said but held back. He looks at Hensworth. “It's beautiful my friend. Thank you.” he says choking on his own words. “Not a problem, I'll leave you alone so you can all catch up.” Hensworth heads back to his shack and Dr. King Schultz bends down and puts the flowers on Little Birds grave. “I'm sorry I haven't come to visit you my Fräulein and the rest of my family.” King says then looks at Django “I need to tell you some things Django, first off I want you to know that this empty spot between my brother and my wife is meant for me. So if I am to die in any of our travels please try to bring me back here so I can be with all of them, if not just burn me, I'll be with them in any case.”
Django nodded “I think I can do that.”
“Good, next I should tell you that there are no guarantees that Broomhilda is even alive which if she isn't I will help you seek your revenge but I'll warn you, revenge will not bring you peace. When I killed Frank Dubell it didn't bring Little Bird back and it never will. The only reason I did take the bounty hunting job is because I know deep down that these men who hurt people have hurt people like me. They've all taken wives, children, mothers, fathers and brothers away from people and I find some peace in killing those who did the taking but it still doesn’t bring those who are lost back. So I have to ask Django, if Broomhilda is gone from this earth are you ready to become like me? A lost soul ready to die at any moment and uses his time last spent here to erase the wrong?”
Django looks off into the distance and sees the mirage of Broomhilda looking back at him. “You have no idea Dr.Schultz.” replied Django smiling back at Schultz and pats him on the back. They leave the flowers with the deceased to whom King says “Auf Wiedersehen ziŋtkála cíkala” to the grave of his wife and they ride off for their next bounty.
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU READ THE FULL STORY AND JUDGE ME! Ha ha I don't care, judge me. But I gotta say that this is the first real fan fiction I've ever written.
I don't really write stories like this and this is the biggest thing I've written in awhile. It's also kind of embarrassing beings I have a slight crush on Christoph Waltz
and I'm a quarter Lakota/Cherokee. Plus I know it's soooooooooo hokey and cliche. It seriously is like Dances with Wolves and I know that, I really do.
But I'm proud of it, the story makes sense to me. It explains a lot about Schultz and I tried to make it as accurate as possible (even though Django:Unchained isn't
any better about historical accuracy.) Also gotta note that I've checked the grammar and spelling multiple times so if there are any grammar nazis out there I don't
blame you just please be gentle. Haven't written anything like this good in a LONG time.
